An iPhone camera can be a great early starting point, and after that, most 50mm lenses will take great photos of the night sky. So any Z series lens from Nikon, an RF lens from Canon, or if you want to go for something more professional, a Samyang XP &#8211; all of these will do the job and turn out breathtaking shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/introducing-deep-sky-photography\/\"><strong>deep sky astrophotography<\/strong><\/a>, you require more advanced equipment, such as a telescope and a sturdy equatorial mount that allows you to track the stars during long exposure shots (remember &#8211; the Earth moves all the time). However, there\u2019s<strong> a downside when editing photos taken with the assistance of a telescope<\/strong>, in that Lightroom, Luminar, GIMP, and other editing tools might not have appropriate lens correction settings. Following are some more factors that influence how you edit your shots, so make sure you know all of these before you begin editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Camera details and techniques that will influence astrophotography editing:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Overexposing vs underexposing a shot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISO invariant sensor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aperture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lens type and quality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Environmental factors that will influence astrophotography editing:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The position and phase of the moon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The amount of light pollution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The amount of dust in the air<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-acf531f stk-block-background\" id=\"editing-your-raw-astrophotography-shots-post-processing-the-milky-way\" data-block-id=\"acf531f\"><style>.stk-acf531f{background-color:#2d8770 !important}.stk-acf531f:before{background-color:#2d8770 !important}.stk-acf531f .stk-block-heading__text{text-shadow:none !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-8,#ffffff) !important}.stk-acf531f .stk-block-heading__bottom-line{background-color:var(--theme-palette-color-8,#ffffff) !important}<\/style><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\">Editing Your RAW Astrophotography Shots &#8211; Post-Processing the Milky Way!<\/h2><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First, remember your goal:<\/strong> to create an editing workflow that works at scale for all of your photo sets. Professional photographers often need to complete multiple projects in record time to turn a profit &#8211; therefore having a reliable photo editing playbook will enable you to do that. So start by selecting the top photos in a set &#8211; use AI tools if necessary to increase the speed of that process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Before You Begin: <\/strong>Calibrate Your Screen\u2019s Colors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for your work to be taken seriously, you also need to treat it seriously. For photographers and graphics professionals, that means starting with color calibration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Clean your monitor thoroughly and make sure there\u2019s no remaining haze.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set your ambient lighting to the way you usually work, making sure there\u2019s no glare on the screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using a color calibration tool, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/truhu.app\/product\"><strong>TruHu<\/strong><\/a> app, and go through color correction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat the process at least once a month as monitors age (losing brightness and color accuracy).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a calibrated screen means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>You can trust the colors you see<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You know your photos will look good on most screens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your photos will be professional and consistent with color standards<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Add Lens Correction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with lens correction settings (under Optics in Lightroom).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most photo editing tools come with built-in presets and profiles for lens correction, allowing you to pick the camera and \/ or lens you were using during your photoshoot. Correct Basic Settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once lens correction is applied, we move on to basic photo settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Correct your exposure to your preferred level, being conscious of whether the shot was overexposed or underexposed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Correct your contrast level accordingly after changing the exposure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The goal of this step should be to keep as many stars and details in your photos as possible while keeping the sky itself dark.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Then move on to more advanced lighting settings:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Correct highlights, shadows, whites, and blacks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To train your eye to see changes, increase and decrease the settings repeatedly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you\u2019re satisfied with the four settings, go back to exposure and contrast and check if you can make any further improvements&nbsp; (I can often lower the exposure even more to achieve higher contrast with the cosmic background).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/35.90.134.179\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2_Lighting-Settings-Before-and-After-Lightroom-Astrophotography-1024x390.jpeg\" alt=\"Lighting Settings Before and After Lightroom Astrophotography\" class=\"wp-image-7289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/truhu.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2_Lighting-Settings-Before-and-After-Lightroom-Astrophotography-1024x390.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/truhu.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2_Lighting-Settings-Before-and-After-Lightroom-Astrophotography-300x114.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/truhu.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2_Lighting-Settings-Before-and-After-Lightroom-Astrophotography-768x292.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/truhu.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2_Lighting-Settings-Before-and-After-Lightroom-Astrophotography-1536x585.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/truhu.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2_Lighting-Settings-Before-and-After-Lightroom-Astrophotography.jpeg 2044w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>For this article, I used some <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.astropix.com\/html\/processing\/practice_files.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong><em>RAW practice files from Astropix<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>. <\/em><\/strong><em>These are great for testing out your skills with astrophotography post-processing. Photo editing is also about artistic vision, so give it a go and see how your results look compared to mine.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Correct Image Effects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step in your editing process should be editing the Effects and, specifically, the Clarity setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Increase your clarity however much you like (I tend to go for between 50 and 60 in Lightroom).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Effects are optional, but they might be good for your photos. I personally like dehazing astrophotography shots since sometimes the pixels between stars can become a bit jagged, creating an overall hazy look. Adjust Colors and Tones<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once that\u2019s done, move on to color correction. The following method comes with a small trick I learned from Mike Smith on YouTube:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>First, under your Color settings, pick your preferred color profile. I personally prefer the blue tint of Tungsten or Fluorescent, as it somewhat mimics the effect Earth\u2019s atmosphere has on the color of the stars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then, temporarily set your Vibrance and Saturation to max.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Correct the temperature and tint settings to achieve the perfect middle ground between blue and yellow and green and pink, respectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reset Vibrance and Saturation to default.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then proceed to tweak all the settings for personal preference. For example, it might make sense to go back and lower your exposure.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Edit Earthly Elements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re doing a composite shot of the Milky Way and the place you\u2019re at, you can use the spot removal and heal tools to remove ugly elements from your photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Examples: <\/strong>billboards, fences, street signs, dumpsters, or anything else that might make the image unsightly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I personally like making sure such elements don\u2019t appear in the initial shots, but sometimes there\u2019s just no way around it. Don\u2019t overdo it, in any case, or it will look unnatural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Practice and Set an Editing Workflow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you get the desired results, export your image and move on to the next one. It\u2019s helpful to practice as much as you can, as it will cut down on editing time significantly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first started editing, it took me about 20 minutes to edit one photo &#8211; which was mostly me second-guessing my editing choices. Today, it takes me at most 5 minutes per photo.
